5-Axis Machining - New Direct Approach Option

Previous versions of Edgecam assumed that the approach move to the start of the 5-axis cycle would move XY and the rotary axes together and then Z. If the tool was below the destination point, this would not always work.

In Edgecam 2009 R2, the 5-axis cycle offers a new Direct Approach option (Links tab):

This option is only used if the tool has been manually positioned or a previous cycle has left the tool at its clearance position.

If checked, the 5-axis cycle moves the tooltip in a straight line to the start point of the cycle. The rotational movement is distributed along the move. (This emulates the TNC M128 mode where the tooltip maintains relative position to the part while moving the rotary axes. Note that machines using absolute co-ordinates, which do not normally have a "Maintain Position" option can also benefit from this emulation.

If unchecked, the 5-axis cycle moves all axes simultaneously to the start point of the cycle.

The option is ignored if the tool is currently at Toolchange or Home Position.  In that case, the XY and rotary axes are moved together and then the tool is moved down the Z axis (current method).
